International Student Experience: Starting without TA funding

For students who have been admitted but have not yet received a TA/RA scholarship offer, it is crucial to meet the prerequisite successfully passing the qualifying exam to become eligible for a TA scholarship. The availability of a TA scholarship is contingent upon factors such as the math department's funding and its requirement for teaching assistants. Please note that there may be a delay in receiving the TA scholarship offer.

From known experience, one student had passed their qualifying exams, but received their TA offer in the Spring semester instead of the Fall semester.

Upon receiving the funding, an additional language prerequisite can be met in two ways: obtaining a score of over 50 on the SPEAK exam (on a 60-point scale) or enrolling in an English-speaking course designed for teaching assistants. However, this should be a minor prerequisite compared to the qualifying exam.

Funding is the main hurdle. This may give those who want to try but are unsure because of the funding the courage to pursue the Ph.D.(dream). I made it, you can also.
